“I’ll be with you again on some distant day, but my darling till then, I will be okay.”

RIGHT NEXT TO ME is the story of a war widow’s attempt to cope with her Marine husband’s death in Iraq. The sung-through musical takes the widow and her husband’s brother (also a Marine) on a quest to scatter her husband’s ashes where he requested, setting off flashbacks of their life and love and leading to an emotionally uplifting transformation.

NPR, SACRAMENTO
“…a sophisticated, small-scale musical…remarkable sensitivity…a standout…even though this is only January, I’m tabbing this as one of the best productions we’ll see all year in Sacramento.”

THE SACRAMENTO BEE
“Wonderfully inventive…witty songs and graceful characterizations …Coffin is an irresistibly emotional writer who avoids sentimentality …a beautifully moving piece that is absolutely worth experiencing.”

SACRAMENTO NEWS & REVIEW
“Beautifully-shaped…a quiet testament to love’s lingering hold over all of us…simple on the outside, complex on the inside…ruminative and bound for glory…musically illuminating matters of the heart.”

KANSAS CITY INFOZINE
“Brought smiles and tears…the songs range from heartbreakingly impassioned to witty and amusing…”

KANSAS CITY STAR
“Coffin is a talented man. His melodies have an agreeable pop sensibility, and he’s a clever lyricist. Beyond that, he’s a serious dramatist with something on his mind…dramatizing just how difficult it is to maintain human relationships in a problem-filled world…”

THE PITCH, KANSAS CITY
“Both scene and music are presented with deft emotional circumspection…Coffin’s best songs are lyrically chatty and chattily lyrical…Ultimately, right next to me reveals — in rhythm and melody, in voice and action — the space between people, whether that space is the size of a planet or a fingernail.”

TALKIN’ BROADWAY
“A serious, thought-provoking tale of how one family starts the healing process after the death of a soldier in the Middle East. Personal and poignant, a well-crafted and appropriately solemn musical landscape, a theater piece which should be seen.”

DAYTONMOSTMETRO
“Genuinely affecting… a poignant, solemn and timely musical about love, loss and acceptance…appealingly surreal exchanges, a series of well-conceived flashbacks and an impactful journey of reconciliation evolving from rocky discord to tender hopefulness keep the action emotionally resonant while providing an assortment of tuneful pluses. Evocative Middle Eastern inflections infused into the pop/ballad-friendly score; delightful, beautifully pensive and plaintive, quietly captivating.”

OAKWOOD REGISTER
“RIGHT NEXT TO ME [is] a poignant exploration of military life and war-time death and the effects on families and society, it takes on an aura of depth and meaning beyond the familiar. The music shimmers as a halo above the sung lyrics. The appeal was infectious. Scene after scene left audience members moved, even to tears.”
